Review: The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort

To wrap up my time in Muscat, I spent a couple of nights at The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort, largely because it is one of the city’s newest luxury properties, and I was able to redeem some Free Night Awards for great value. I also had a few Nightly Upgrade Awards expiring soon, and I have had good success using them at St. Regis properties in the past.

The resort is also conveniently located about 15 minutes from Muscat International Airport (MCT), making it an ideal final stop in Oman before my Qatar Airways Qsuite flight to Tokyo. 

As it turned out, I was upgraded to one of the resort’s highest room categories and was able to take full advantage of many of the property’s premium amenities and facilities.

Booking

I booked my stay using a pair of 35,000-point Free Night Awards earned from holding several Marriott Bonvoy co-branded credit cards issued by American Express.

Fortunately, both nights of my stay were available at PointsSavers rates, which meant I could redeem the Free Night Awards without needing any additional points.

Overall, this is an incredibly affordable St. Regis property when it comes to redemptions. During the low season, award nights typically cost around 48,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, while peak season rates can climb to roughly 75,000 points per night.

These redemption rates compare very favorably to the cash prices, which start around CA$400 per night and can exceed CA$1,000 during peak periods.

Before my stay, I also applied a couple of Nightly Upgrade Awards that were due to expire at the end of the year. Rather than let them go to waste, I selected every room category that included a private plunge pool and didn’t think much more about it.

To my surprise, the upgrade cleared a few days before arrival, and I was upgraded to a Palm Duplex Suite, a massive two-level suite that retails for an astonishing CA$2,300 per night.

I was somewhat puzzled to see the Palm Duplex Suite available as a Nightly Upgrade Award option, especially considering it can accommodate up to six guests, and is well beyond a typical suite you often see available as an upgrade choice. Even though much of the extra space went unused since I was traveling alone, experiences like this demonstrate the value and versatility of Free Night Awards and Upgrade Awards once you’re far outside North America.

Check-in

I arrived at the resort following a few nights at W Muscat and was promptly assisted by the valet staff, who took my bags and directed me to the reception desks for check-in.

All buildings in Oman must be white or a light shade of grey, but the resort’s exterior incorporates a wave-inspired design that helps it stand out. In a destination where many buildings can blend together visually, the architecture adds a welcome sense of character and individuality.

The lobby makes a strong first impression, setting the tone for the resort with an elegant design. Two sweeping curved staircases frame the space, and a grand piano serves as the focal point at the center of the room.

Toward the rear of the lobby, you’ll find both indoor and outdoor seating for The Lounge. At the back of the lounge are the doors that lead out to the resort’s pool deck.

I was invited to sit at the check-in desk, where I was offered a welcome drink along with two cold towels to freshen up while the check-in formalities were completed.

The agent confirmed my reservation, acknowledged my Titanium Elite status, and offered a choice between bonus points or complimentary breakfast. As always, I selected the breakfast benefit.

Finally, the agent confirmed my upgrade to a Palm Duplex Suite and handed over my room key.

Location

The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort is located in the upscale Al Mouj waterfront development in Muscat, Oman, directly along the coastline overlooking the Gulf of Oman. The resort sits beside Al Mouj Marina and the Al Mouj Golf Course, giving it a more modern and resort-oriented atmosphere compared to many other parts of Muscat.

The location is particularly convenient for travelers, as it’s only around 15 minutes from Muscat International Airport, while still offering easy access to shopping, restaurants, and seaside walking areas within the Al Mouj community. 

For those looking to visit some of Muscat’s historic attractions like Mutrah Souq and Old Muscat, this property will likely not be the most convenient. However, if you’re just seeking a beachfront setting and easy access to shops and restaurants, this area is one of the city’s premier luxury leisure locations. 

Parking

Complimentary self-parking and valet parking is available to all hotel guests.

Room – Palm Duplex, 2 Bedroom Suite

The Palm Duplex Suite spans an insane 2,800 square feet across two levels and includes two bedrooms, four bathrooms, four separate outdoor spaces, five TVs, a full kitchen, and a private plunge pool.

Upon entering the suite, there is a foyer with a hallway leading directly to the two bedrooms, and a staircase on the right descending to the lower level.

The master bedroom alone is larger than most hotel rooms and reminded me of the similar style to The St. Regis Red Sea Resort, with its sand-toned palette complemented by subtle ocean-inspired accents and colors.

At the center of the room is a king-sized bed flanked by a nightstand on either side. Since this is a very new property, plenty of charging ports and power outlets were conveniently located at the bedside and throughout the room for charging devices.

Opposite the bed was a large wall-mounted flat-screen TV positioned above a dresser, alongside two minibar cabinets.

The two minibar cabinets were packed with a variety of goodies, including bottled water, snacks, coffee, and tea, along with a mini refrigerator and a Nespresso machine.

At the far end of the room, near the sliding door leading to the patio, was a sitting area with a sectional sofa, an armchair, and a coffee table.

The master bedroom offers ample storage, including a large closet with plenty of hangers. Inside the closet, you’ll also find a luggage rack, robes, an iron and ironing board, an in-room safe, and a handheld clothing steamer.

Out on the master bedroom patio were a couple of loungers and sofa.

The patio overlooked the pool of the St. Regis residences units, with the Gulf of Oman in the distance.

The master bathroom was just as luxurious, with a double vanity, a freestanding bathtub, and separate shower and toilet areas.

A wide range of toiletries were provided, including REN Skincare soaps along with bath salts, dental kits, shaving kits, loofahs, and more.

The master bathroom also included a toilet chamber with a bidet, along with a walk-in rainfall shower.

Moving into the second bedroom, you’ll find another fully furnished space featuring two queen beds, a small dining table, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, and two large closets.

The second bedroom also has a full bathroom with a dual vanity setup, walk-in shower, and toilet chamber.

The patio off the second bedroom featured a small dining table and a lounge chair.

The lower level of the suite featured a massive family room furnished with two large sectional sofas, a dining table, and additional high-top bar seating, creating an ideal common space for everyone in the suite to enjoy.

On the coffee table was a handwritten note welcoming me to the resort, along with a bowl of fresh fruit, a selection of chocolates, and a printed guide outlining the resort’s amenities and services.

The lower level includes two additional bathrooms, consisting of a third full bathroom and a smaller half bath located at the foot of the stairs.

Also on the lower level was a fully equipped kitchen with everything you would need to prepare a meal or host a dinner, including a cooktop, oven, full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, ice machine, and microwave.

The patio off the living room featured a large outdoor dining table with seating for eight, along with a sofa.

The final room on the lower level can function as a flexible space, such as a third bedroom, home office, or kids’ playroom.

The patio extending out from the flex room includes a plunge pool along with a couple of loungers.

By no means the largest plunge pool you’ll come across, but I always appreciate having a private in-room pool to use when I don’t feel like heading to the main resort pool.

Okay – so, wow. I was speechless after a tour of this duplex suite. I had no idea the room I was assigned would turn out to be the largest suite I’ve ever stayed in, and even the butler who escorted me to the room seemed surprised that I had received it as a solo guest. I’m not sure whether this was a glitch in how a Nightly Upgrade Award to this room type was available, but I certainly wasn’t about to question it.

If anything, it serves as a good reminder that while Nightly Upgrade Awards in North America have become less powerful over time, they can still unlock some amazing rooms at many international properties.

Restaurants & Bars

The dining options at The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort spans a wide range of global cuisines, with a strong focus on upscale, international, and lifestyle-driven concepts.

Not all of the restaurants were open during my stay, and it seemed like the resort may operate some venues seasonally or on a rotational basis. Either way, the sheer number of dining options is impressive. For a resort of this size, the variety and range of cuisines are notable.

Karibu – Marriott Bonvoy Elite Complimentary Breakfast

Breakfast is served at Karibu and features a generous buffet alongside made-to-order hot dishes from the menu.

The buffet was extensive and included all the standard breakfast offerings such as fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, pastries, meats, and cheeses. Additionally, some local items like Arabic breads, along with international options like dim sum were available.

The menu offered a wide selection of egg dishes, as well as both sweet and savory breakfast options.

No mention of a limit on the number of items I could order from the menu was made, so I went with an omelette and French toast, and both were excellent.

Overall, it was a great breakfast, made even better by the Marriott Bonvoy breakfast benefit. Breakfast at St. Regis properties rarely disappoint, and if you have the required status, the benefit goes a long way here.

The Stage Bar & Lounge

The Stage Bar & Lounge is the signature St. Regis bar where the nightly sabrage ritual takes place. I stopped by one evening to enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne and ordered some tuna rolls for a bite to eat.

While luxury hotel rates in Oman can be quite reasonable compared to many other regions, the country itself is far from inexpensive. The Omani rial is one of the strongest currencies in the world, and the Canadian dollar does not exchange particularly well against it. Combined with Oman’s high standard of living and the premium pricing that comes with staying at a St. Regis property, food and beverage costs can add up quickly. For example, a typical 8 OMR cocktail works out to nearly CA$30.

Facilities

Fitness Center

The resort features two fitness centers: a co-ed facility open to all guests and a separate fitness center exclusively for women.

The mixed-gender fitness center has a lounge area where you can grab a refreshment or a snack and relax before or after your workout.

The fitness center is very well equipped, featuring the latest generation of Technogym equipment. It offers an extensive selection of cardio machines, a wide variety of strength-training equipment, and a dedicated free weights area complete with a flat bench press and Smith machine.

The fitness center also includes a Pilates studio with three Reformer machines, something I’ve never come across in a hotel gym before. Considering that these cost several thousand dollars per unit, having three of them parked here is kind of wild.

Pool

Resort guests can enjoy a large central adults-only pool along with a smaller children’s pool, both offering a range of seating options from standard loungers to more private cabana-style setups.

Toward the beach end of the pool is a swim-up bar along with a shallow ledge where guests can lounge and sunbathe directly in the water.

I didn’t see many children during my stay, but I imagine this resort is popular with families, so having separate pools for adults and kids is appreciated. The resort even provides pool floaties for kids.

Beach

The resort is set along a pleasant stretch of private beach. The sand is groomed nightly, and I found it soft and well maintained. I didn’t go in the ocean, but the waters looked calm thanks to the breakwater that offered the beach some protection from currents and waves.

The Al Mouj area is still undergoing significant development, so there isn’t much in the surrounding vicinity. As a result, guests can often enjoy a long strip of beach that’s relatively quiet and uncrowded.

The resort provides dozens of loungers with ample shade, along with service from the poolside bar. Attendants regularly provide chilled bottled water, along with other refreshments throughout the day.

Guerlain Spa

The resort features a full-service spa with all the usual amenities. I visited one evening to use the steam room and sauna and was offered a tour of the facilities by a staff member.

As is often the case, I rarely see anyone else using the steam room or sauna, and I always appreciate when guests can access these facilities without needing to book a treatment, which is something I’ve encountered at other St. Regis properties.

Conclusion

The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort is perhaps one of the best value St. Regis resorts in the world. Being able to redeem a 35,000-point Free Night Award with little to no top-up is at the very least an intriguing opportunity for a property of this caliber.

Elite recognition is also a strong point, with a solid breakfast offered to elite members each morning and a wide selection of suites often available through Nightly Upgrade Awards, making it an appealing option for loyalists.

While the location is not as central as other parts of Muscat, the resort itself offers plenty to keep guests occupied, including numerous dining options and outstanding facilities, making it a great choice for a relaxing beachfront stay.
