UK Named the World’s Most Well-Travelled Adventurers in Global David Attenborough Challenge | News

Nearly 20,000 people across five countries took part in a worldwide survey inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s extraordinary travels, revealing the UK’s enduring passion for exploration, wildlife and conservation.
To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday earlier in the year, adventure travel specialist Explore Worldwide invited people from around the globe to discover just how closely their own travels mirror those of Britain’s greatest natural historian.
Using more than seven decades of documentary footage and research spanning 43 landmark programmes dating back to 1955, Explore Worldwide created the first interactive map charting every destination Sir David has presented from during his remarkable career. The project identified 333 filming locations across 83 countries and territories, allowing participants to calculate their own personalised “Attenborough Score” by selecting every country they had visited.
The worldwide survey attracted 19,456 participants from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, revealing not only an enduring fascination with Sir David’s extraordinary career but also a continued appetite for meaningful, nature-led travel.
The UK emerged as the most well-travelled nation in the survey. UK participants achieved an average Attenborough Score of 28%, meaning the average British traveller has already visited more than a quarter of the countries Sir David has explored during his lifetime. Australia followed with an average score of 25%, ahead of New Zealand and the United States on 23%, while Canada recorded 21%.
Across all five countries, the average Attenborough Score was 26%, while the median score stood at 20%, highlighting just how exceptional Sir David’s lifetime of exploration has been.
Yet many participants have travelled extensively themselves, with almost one in seven (14%) having visited more than half of the countries featured in Sir David’s travels. Three per cent had reached more than 80% of his destinations, while an elite two per cent had travelled to more than 90% of the countries he has visited.
The campaign also saw participation increase dramatically, attracting 77% more entrants than Explore Worldwide’s original “How David Attenborough Are You?” campaign which was launched back in 2023. The strong response suggests Sir David’s influence continues to inspire people not only to explore the world, but to do so with a greater appreciation of wildlife, conservation and the importance of protecting the planet for future generations.
Michael Edwards, Managing Director of Explore Worldwide, said: ” Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday was certainly a milestone that deserves global celebration. Few people have changed the way we see our planet as profoundly as Sir David. For decades, he has inspired generations to travel with curiosity, humility and respect for the natural world.
“What we’ve seen through this campaign is that his influence is as powerful as ever. Nearly 20,000 people wanted to measure their own adventures against his incredible lifetime of exploration, and the results show there’s a real desire to experience the world’s wildlife and wild places first-hand.
“It’s especially fitting that the UK topped the rankings. Sir David has inspired millions of Britons to look beyond their own shores, while also helping people understand that travel and conservation can go hand in hand. We hope his work continues to encourage future generations to explore responsibly and to value the extraordinary wildlife and landscapes that make our planet so unique.”
For those inspired to follow in Sir David Attenborough’s footsteps, Explore Worldwide’s Gorilla Discovery adventure offers the chance to experience one of the planet’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Combining Uganda and Rwanda, the journey includes unforgettable gorilla trekking in the ancient forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where travellers can observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
The itinerary also explores the wildlife-rich landscapes of Lake Mburo National Park, home to leopard, hyena and buffalo, before crossing into Rwanda’s spectacular Volcanoes National Park to search for the rare golden monkey. The adventure concludes in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. Prices start from £4,990 per person, excluding flights.
