We Tried 3 Shave Ice Spots in Kauai. Here’s the Honest Ranking

Let's Go!

Spoiler: the most acclaimed spot didn’t win.

Shave ice gets lumped in with snow cones by people who haven’t tried it. It’s not the same. The difference is in the ice. It’s shaved so fine it’s closer to powder than ice. So, syrup absorbed all the way through rather than sitting at the bottom of a cup.  Kauai takes it seriously, and after one cup you’ll understand why locals get opinionated about where to get it.

On a mother-daughter trip across the Garden Isle, we made it our mission to find the best. Here’s what we found.

#3: RipTides Shave Ice & Snacks — Lawai Beach, South Shore

Don’t let the ranking fool you. RipTides is a genuinely wonderful stop and the location alone is worth the detour.

RipTides is a small elevated food shack steps from the ocean, right in front of Lawai Beach Resort. They offer both traditional syrups and organic fruit options made with real fruit and cane sugar. The mango and passionfruit flavors are so delicious and the texture is soft and fine.

The experience of eating here is hard to beat. Find a spot on the lava rocks by the waterfront, watch the waves, and let the afternoon slow down. If you’re staying on the south shore, this is your spot.

📍 5017 Lawai Rd, Koloa (in front of Lawai Beach Resort)

#2: JoJo’s Shave Ice — Hanalei (and beyond)

JoJo’s has been serving shave ice on Kauai since 1992 and has since expanded to four locations -Waimea (the original), Hanalei, Koloa, and Kapaa at Coconut Marketplace. That kind of longevity on an island full of competition means something, and the reviews back it up.

JoJo’s makes their own homemade syrups – no commercial syrup, no corn syrup. Just pure cane sugar and fresh Hawaiian flavors. Their house-made cream toppings are legendary, and the serving sizes are generous: choose between the Da Kine (28 oz.) or the Big Kahuna (40 oz.). You can choose to get ice cream at the bottom.

Here’s my honest take: JoJo’s is the most acclaimed shave ice on the island and I wanted to love it more than I did. I can’t put my finger on exactly why it didn’t win us over, but something about our experience just didn’t hit the same way. That could be the location we visited, the flavors we chose, or just the unpredictable nature of personal taste. I suspect that the ice cream at the bottom didn’t hit right… but not entirely sure. Every other traveler I know swears by JoJo’s. Go and decide for yourself.

#1: Uncle’s Shave Ice — Various Locations

Uncle’s was our favorite. I wish I could give you a more analytical reason — the syrup chemistry, the ice texture, a specific flavor combination that changed my life. What I can tell you is that after three stops across the island, Uncle’s was the one we kept talking about.

Sometimes that’s just how food works. You can’t always explain why something lands. Uncle’s landed. It was also closest to where we were staying, so it was our “local” spot, and we went quite a few times.

Uncle’s is an island staple with multiple locations across Kauai. It has classic flavors done really well, and the kind of unpretentious, no-fuss experience that feels authentically local.
