Expedia Tech Exec on Build Versus Buy: Keep Customer Data Close

When deciding whether to build, partner, or acquire AI capabilities, Expedia Group Chief Product and Technology Officer Shilpa Ranganathan has a clear rule: anything that touches customer data is a build.

“One of the things that I think about fundamentally is anything to do with customers’ data and control, [and] privacy, we want to keep that as close to us as possible, so that’s a build,” Ranganathan said at the Skift Data + AI Summit in New York Wednesday.
